Here is the difference between physX on and off in Mirror's Edge. There definitely are a few things that you miss without it on.
I feel a lot of the effects could have been implemented in the game, physx on or off.
Splinter Cell series has been using these type of wavy flags, ripped open plastic, glass shards effects for a long time now, without physx. Perhaps nvidia pushed EA/DICE to do the game this way?

But Chaos Theory (release date March '05) which doesn't use PX, has a similar effect around min. 1:04 in this video...
