Wanted to start a thread where people can post their favorite quotes. Or where they can comment on someone's quote, how they interpret it, how it helped them in their lives, how they use it in their life etc. One of the keys in discussing a quote is how do you read it, put the quote into simple language, or embellish it, flesh it out so others can see if they agree with your interpretation or not. Also, when showing how you use a quote in your life, give examples if at all possible. Any quote is acceptable, funny quotes are a plus .... Thanks guys, hope to hear from all of you!

I'll start out with four quotes from Rene Descartes. I've been perusing his texts "Discourse on the Methods of Rightly Conducting the Reason and Seeking Truth in the Sciences", his "Meditations on the First Philosophy" and lastly his "Principles of Philosophy". All quotes come from those books


1.) Except our own thoughts, there is nothing absolutely in our power.
-took me a while to fully comprehend this, but it is how I accept relationships, control, material goods and the limits of money.

2.) Divide each difficulty into as many parts as is feasible and necessary to resolve it.
-how I've studied for every exam since highschool through medical school. Divide and conquer, works with most any conundrum.

3.) I think; therefore I am.
-I always confuse this as being of a Greek stoic philosopher, but in fact it is the French Descartes.

4.) Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it.
- I'm actually finding it hard to comprehend this quote fully over the years. A definition of "soul" has always eluded me. Whether it is an energy source that brightens up our eyes and pumps blood through our aorta/vena cava or it's some mythical quasi religious idea
